# 사건발생 21년 9개월, 7958일만의 검거

 

 지난 8월 18일, ‘제주 이승용 변호사 살인사건’의 피의자 김 씨가 캄보디아에서 국내로 송환됐다. 故 이승용 변호사는 1999년 11월 5일 새벽, 제주 북초등학교 인근 자신의 차량에서 피살당한 채 발견되었다. 그는 불의를 참지 못하는 정의감과 약자들을 위한 배려심이 가득한, 검사 출신 변호사였다. 안타깝게도 당시 그의 죽음은 범인을 찾지 못하고 미제사건으로 끝났다. 노력과 우연이 겹쳐 발생한 기적, 살인 사건이 발생한지 약 21년 9개월, 일수로는 무려 7958일만의 용의자 검거였다. 

 김 씨는 캄보디아에 불법체류 중이던 지난 2019년, <그것이 알고 싶다> 제작진에게 자발적으로 제보를 해왔다. 그는 본인이 이승용 변호사 살인 사건의 진실을 알고 있다며 제작진을 만났고, 범행과 관련한 인터뷰에도 응했다. 사건 당시 제주 폭력 조직 유탁파의 행동대장이었던 김 씨는, 두목으로부터 ‘이승용 변호사를 혼내주라’는 지시를 받은 뒤, 다른 조직원인 ‘갈매기’에게 이 지시를 전달했다는데....김 씨는 일을 위임받은 ‘갈매기’가 우발적으로 이승용 변호사를 살해하게 되었다고 주장했다. 

 <그것이 알고 싶다>에서는 김 씨의 자백을 심층 분석해, 억울하게 목숨을 잃은 이승용 변호사 살인 사건을 지난 해 두 차례에 걸쳐 방송했다. 그런데, 제작 과정에서 만난 범죄심리학자들은 입을 모아 놀라운 사실을 지적했다. 그것은 제작진에게 제보를 해 온 김 씨가 이승용 변호사의 살인 사건 현장에 있었을지도 모른다는 분석이었다. 

 

# 극적인 반전, 번복된 진술

 

 이런 내용이 방송되자, 이후 수사기관에서는 <그것이 알고 싶다>에 협조 요청을 해왔고, 제작진이 취재한 내용을 토대로 수사가 새롭게 진행되었다. 첫 방송 직후 제작진과의 통화에서 김 씨는, 범행을 부인할 거라는 예상과 달리 뜻밖의 이야기를 들려주기도 했다.  

 

“공소시효 다 지났고 뭐했고! 

내가 죽였다고 내가, 내가 범인이라고 해도 

지금 나를 처벌할 수가 없지 않습니까?”

 실제로 1999년 11월 5일 발생한 ‘제주 이승용 변호사 살인사건’의 공소시효는 2014년 11월 4일까지였다. 김 씨는 사건의 공소시효를 철저히 계산 후 자백했던 것. 하지만 그는 방송 이후 인터폴에 적색수배 되었고, 결국 지난 6월 캄보디아 시소폰 검문소에서 체포되었는데... 공소시효가 끝난 사건이라면, 김 씨는 어떻게 1년 만에 피의자 신분으로 수배자가 되었던 걸까? 

 극적인 반전 끝에 김 씨가 어렵사리 검거되었지만, 조사 과정에서 그는 자백과 부인을 반복하며 진술을 여러 번 바꿨다고 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 검찰은 김 씨를 결국 ‘살인’ 혐의로 구속기소했다. 약 22년간 미제로 남아있던 이승용 변호사 살인 사건, 오랜 시간이 흘러 직접 증거를 확보하기 어려운 상황이었지만 검찰은 그의 범행을 확신했던 것. 과연 그 날의 진실을 알려주는 단서는 무엇이었을까?  

 

# 16시간의 기록, 살인범의 자백

방송에다 대고 스스로 범행을 자백하고 나온 거잖아요. 공소시효 끝난 줄 알고.

 전문가들은 김 씨가 <그것이 알고 싶다> 카메라 앞에서 직접 진술한 인터뷰 내용 그 자체가 이례적으로 유력한 증거가 될 수 있다고 지적했다. 실제로 제작진과 김 씨가 이야기를 나눈 촬영 및 녹음파일은 10시간이 넘는 13번의 통화와 5시간가량의 인터뷰를 포함해 자그마치 16시간 분량에 달한다. 

 제작진의 카메라에 자세히 기록된 김 씨의 진술 중, 그의 살인 혐의를 입증해줄 보다 강력한 자백은 무엇일까? 제작진은 16시간에 이르는 기록을 면밀히 검토했다. 그 결과, 범행에 사용한 것으로 추정되는 ‘흉기’에 관한 그의 진술이 예사롭지 않음을 발견했는데....

 사건 당시 부검 결과, 이승용 변호사는 ‘흉기’로 공격당했고, 범인이 사용한 흉기는 웬만한 것으로는 뚫기 어려운 흉골을 지나 그의 심장을 관통했다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 김 씨는 제작진과의 인터뷰 도중, 범행에 사용된 흉기가 얇고 좁게 갈아낸 칼이라고 설명하며 손수 그림을 그리기까지 했는데... 그 모양은 놀랍게도 시신에 남은 상처의 형태와 매우 흡사했다. 김 씨의 주장대로라면 자신은 사건 현장에 있지도 않았는데, 어떻게 흉기의 형태를 그토록 자세하게 알 수가 있던 것일까... 과연, 이승용 변호사를 죽음에 이르게 한 흉기와 김 씨는 어떤 관련이 있는 것일까? 

 

 

# 예리한 증언, 겨누어진 진실

 

 숨겨진 진실을 확인하기 위해, 김 씨와 관련된 수많은 사람들을 찾아다닌 제작진. 제작진은 취재 도중 어렵게 만난 제보자들을 통해 놀라운 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 김 씨가 이와 비슷한 칼을 가지고 다닌 걸 봤다는 목격자들이 있다는 것! 심지어 그들 중 일부는 김 씨로부터 그 칼을 이용해 직접 협박을 당하기도 했다는데... 정말 김 씨는 제보자를 위협했던 그 칼로 22년 전 이승용 변호사를 살해한 걸까?

# Arrest after 21 years, 9 months, 7958 days of the incident.

 On August 18, Kim, a suspect in the murder case of Jeju Lee Seung-yong, was repatriated from Cambodia to Korea. The late lawyer Lee Seung-yong was found murdered in his vehicle near Jeju Buk Elementary School in the early morning of November 5, 1999. He was a prosecutor-turned-lawyer full of justice and consideration for the weak. Unfortunately, his death at the time ended in an unsolved case without finding the criminal. It was the arrest of the suspect about 21 years and 9 months after the murder and 7,958 days after the miracle that occurred due to the combination of effort and coincidence. 
 In 2019, when Kim was illegally staying in Cambodia, he voluntarily reported to the production crew of "Unanswered Questions." He met with the production team, saying he knew the truth about the murder of lawyer Lee Seung-yong, and also responded to interviews related to the crime. At the time of the incident, Kim, the action leader of the Jeju violent organization Yutakpa, was told to scold lawyer Lee Seung-yong from his boss and delivered the order to another member, "Seagull," claiming that Kim accidentally murdered lawyer Lee Seung-yong. 
 <Unanswered Questions> analyzed Kim's confession in-depth and broadcasted the murder of lawyer Lee Seung-yong twice last year. However, criminal psychologists I met during the production process agreed to point out the surprising fact. It was analyzed that Kim, who had been tip-off to the production crew, may have been at the scene of lawyer Lee Seung-yong's murder. 

# Dramatic twist, reversed statement.

 When these contents were broadcast, the investigative agency has since asked for cooperation with <Unanswered Questions>, and the investigation was newly conducted based on what the production team covered. In a phone call with the production crew shortly after the first broadcast, Kim told an unexpected story, contrary to expectations that he would deny the crime.  

"The statute of limitations has expired. What did you do?" 
I killed him. Even if I were the culprit, 
You can't punish me right now, right?

 In fact, the statute of limitations for the "Jeju Attorney Lee Seung-yong Murder Case" that occurred on November 5, 1999 was until November 4, 2014. Kim confessed after thoroughly calculating the statute of limitations in the case, but he was wanted red by Interpol after the broadcast, and was eventually arrested at the Sissofon checkpoint in Cambodia in June... If the statute of limitations has expired, how did Kim become a wanted person as a suspect after a year? 
 After a dramatic reversal, Kim was arrested with difficulty, but during the investigation, he repeatedly confessed and denied and changed his statement several times. Nevertheless, the prosecution eventually arrested Kim on charges of "murder." The murder of lawyer Lee Seung-yong, who had remained unsolved for about 22 years, was difficult to secure direct evidence after a long time, but the prosecution was convinced of his crime. What was the clue that told the truth of the day?  

#16 hour record, killer's confession.

 "The most powerful evidence right now is the broadcast screen. 
You confessed to the crime on your own on the broadcast. I thought the statute of limitations was over. 
This is a rare case."

 Experts pointed out that Kim's interview in person in front of the camera in "Unanswered Questions" itself could be unusually strong evidence. In fact, the filming and recording files that the production team and Kim talked about amounted to as little as 16 hours, including 13 calls and about 5 hours of interviews. 
 Among Kim's statements recorded in detail on the production team's camera, what is a stronger confession that will prove his murder charges? The production team closely reviewed the 16-hour record. As a result, it was found that his statement regarding the "weapon" presumed to have been used in the crime was unusual...
 As a result of the autopsy at the time of the incident, it was confirmed that lawyer Lee Seung-yong was attacked with a "weapon," and the weapon used by the criminal penetrated his heart through the sternum, which was difficult to pierce. During an interview with the production crew, Kim even drew a picture by himself, explaining that the weapon used in the crime was a thin and narrow knife. The shape was surprisingly very similar to the shape of the wound left on the body. According to Kim's claim, he was not even at the scene of the incident, so how could he know the form of the weapon in so much detail? What does Kim have to do with the weapon that killed lawyer Lee Seung-yong? 


# Sharp testimony, targeted truth.

 The production crew who visited numerous people related to Kim to confirm the hidden truth. The production team was able to confirm the surprising fact through the informants they met with difficulty during the coverage. There are witnesses who said they saw Mr. Kim carrying a similar knife! Some of them were even threatened directly by Mr. Kim using the knife. Did Kim really kill lawyer Lee Seung-yong 22 years ago with the knife that threatened the informant? 


"It's sparkling where you've been to a lot of places." But this knife was like that.
